How to Contest Traffic Fines in the UAE: A Step-by-Step Legal Guide

8 April 2025 · Aeron Abraham Thomas · 3 min read

In a country like the UAE, where road safety is a top priority, traffic enforcement is strict and efficient. Speed cameras, radar systems, and patrols ensure that violations are swiftly recorded, and fines issued. However, not every fine is necessarily fair—and if you’ve received a penalty, you believe was issued in error, you do have the right to contest it.

Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of how to dispute traffic fines in the UAE, along with practical tips and legal insights to help you navigate the process smoothly.

Your Right to Dispute a Fine

Traffic fines can be challenged across all emirates. Whether it’s a case of mistaken identity, unclear road signage, or a system glitch, UAE law gives drivers the opportunity to object. However, you must act within a specific time frame—typically 15 to 30 days from the date the fine is issued. After that, the fine becomes enforceable and harder to reverse.

How to File a Dispute (By Emirate)

Dubai

      • In-Person: Visit the General Directorate of Traffic in Al Barsha or any Dubai Police station.
      • Online: Submit your complaint through the RTA website or the Dubai Prosecution website.
      • Documents Needed:
      • Emirates ID
      • Vehicle registration (Mulkiya)
      • Driving license
      • A copy of the fine
      • Any supporting materials (evidence, photographs, footage)
      • Note: A small fee may apply. If your complaint is successful, the fee will be refunded.

Abu Dhabi

      • Steps:
      • Log in using your UAE Pass
      • Choose “Objection to a Traffic Violation”
      • Fill in the form and upload evidence
      • Outcome: You’ll be notified by SMS or email once the review is complete.

Sharjah

      • WhatsApp Option: Message +971 6 517 7555 (Sharjah Police Traffic Department).
      • MOI App:
      • Log in with UAE Pass
      • Go to “Traffic Violations” and file the objection
      • Attach necessary documents
      • Timeline: Most objections are reviewed within a few working days.

What Evidence Should You Provide?

Strong evidence can make or break your case. Consider including:

  • Photos of the area or road signs involved
  • Screenshots from navigation apps
  • Witness statements, if applicable

Keep it factual and focused on the violation itself. Emotional arguments rarely hold weight with reviewing authorities.

What If Your Objection Is Rejected?

If your initial complaint is denied, you may be able to escalate the matter:

  • In Dubai, this means approaching the Public Prosecution office.
  • In other emirates, reach out to the Traffic Prosecution Department or the relevant authority for appeal guidance.

This stage can involve a formal hearing or a legal submission—having legal support at this point is strongly recommended.

Timelines & Final Resolution

Most disputes are processed within 5–10 working days. If the complaint is accepted, the fine may be cancelled or revised. If rejected, payment must be made promptly to avoid black points, vehicle impoundment, or increased penalties.

How Legal Support Can Help

Disputing a traffic fine can be time-sensitive and documentation-heavy.

If you’ve received a traffic fine that you believe is unjust, you may seek professional support to guide you through every step of the dispute if you find it difficult to navigate the legal system by yourself.
