Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court Achieves Record Judicial Milestone: 8,886 Transactions in Q1 2026

April 16, 2026by ATB Research Team0

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has released its performance report for the first quarter of 2026, revealing a significant surge in judicial activity within the Civil Family Court for Foreigners. Processing a total of 8,886 transactions between January and March, the court has set a new benchmark for efficiency under the emirate’s progressive legislative framework.

The data underscores the success of Law No. 14 of 2021, which governs personal status for non-Muslims, establishing Abu Dhabi as a premier global destination for legal certainty and civil liberties.

A Surge in Civil Marriages and Asset Protection

The quarterly figures provide a comprehensive look at how the expatriate and investor community is utilizing the court’s specialized services. The transactions are almost evenly split between family formation and long-term estate planning:

  • Civil Marriages: The court documented 4,320 civil marriage contracts. This high volume reflects the growing popularity of Abu Dhabi’s “civil marriage” model, which offers a simplified, secular process for foreign couples and tourists alike.

  • Civil Wills: A total of 4,566 civil wills were registered during the same period. This trend highlights a critical shift in the legal landscape, as residents increasingly move to secure their assets and property distribution through the court’s specialized registry, which guarantees the application of the testator’s wishes over traditional default distributions.

Exceptional Monthly Performance

The report highlights a period of “exceptional activity” between February 28 and March 25, 2026. In this 25-day window alone, the court successfully processed 2,614 transactions.

Maintaining an average output of approximately 25 cases per day, the ADJD has demonstrated that high volume does not come at the expense of speed. Legal experts attribute this efficiency to the department’s fully integrated digital framework, which allows for remote filings, electronic notarizations, and the swift issuance of legal documents.

Legal Significance for the Expatriate Community

For legal practitioners and international investors, these statistics are more than just numbers; they represent a stable and attractive legal environment. The ability to register a civil will or a marriage contract within a sophisticated digital ecosystem provides the “legal peace of mind” necessary for long-term residency and investment in the UAE.

By offering a legislative umbrella that aligns with international best practices, Abu Dhabi has effectively eliminated many of the traditional legal complexities faced by foreigners. The court’s ability to handle nearly 9,000 applications in a single quarter proves that the system is not only robust but also highly scalable to meet the needs of a growing global population.

As Abu Dhabi continues to lead the region in judicial innovation, the Q1 2026 results from the Civil Family Court serve as a testament to the emirate’s vision of a modern, inclusive, and efficient justice system. With a clear focus on digital transformation and specialized law, the ADJD remains at the forefront of providing world-class legal protection for all residents.
