« Back to Glossary IndexIntellectual Property (IP)
Intellectual Property (IP) refers to legal rights protecting creative works, inventions, brand identities, and trade secrets. The UAE enforces trademark, patent, copyright, and industrial design protections under Federal Law No. 36 of 2021 on Trademarks, Federal Law No. 11 of 2021 on Industrial Property, and Federal Law No. 38 of 2021 on Copyrights and Related Rights. The Ministry of Economy handles IP registrations, while specialized free zones like DIFC and Masdar City offer additional IP protections for tech startups and innovation-driven businesses. The UAE is also a signatory to the Paris Convention, TRIPS Agreement, and the Berne Convention, ensuring global recognition of intellectual property rights.
